No, this really didn't happen at the Schmidt house...

but really could have.

We have to start every meeting at work with a safety story - since our business is a mostly production environment - large grain elevators and soybean crush plants - this would make sense.

Last week one of the guys on my team shared the following story about his buddy - which I can totally imagine would happen at our home.

The story:

My co-worker's buddy's family had a squirrel problem - two took up residence in the family's chimney and with the cold weather the husband decided that something needed to be done about the squatters. So the wife suggested that they call an exterminator to relocate the squirrels. The husband decided that he would be able to handle the situation himself.

So, he decided to smoke out the squirrels.

He started a fire in the fireplace, and waited.

One of the squirrels panicked and rather than going up and out it went down and out - through the fire - and started its tail ablaze (poor squirrel).

Husband panicked and started chasing the flaming squirrel

Squirrel ran to GET OUT of the house and ran to the sliding glass door -

which resulted in the drapes starting on fire.

So there the guy was with burning drapes and burning furry rodent.

He managed to open the door - squirrel went outside and he managed to put the drapes out.

Let's just say the wife was none too happy and reminded the husband that it would have been cheaper to just call the exterminator...

I was holding my breath through this entire story, because you SO KNOW it could have happened at my house, too.

Except at our houses, little boys would be chasing on-fire squirrels, maybe with fire extinguishers, and maybe being the heroes of the story or maybe making things much, much worse.

Gainfully employed

I heard back last night from Cargill , I start back into the world of the gainfully employed as an independent contractor on October 8 th . My old client, who will now be my new client, Jeff wrote: I'm thrilled we get to work together again. This is the most important project our business unit has taken on in a lot of years so I feel a lot better knowing you're going to be part of it. OK now I'm nervous. Eeek - the most important project? Whoa, better bring the A game, but you know I am excited - scared - but am ready to go. I have so much to do before the 8 th , gotta get the list together to make the most of my kid free week (now that litte man is at daycare in the a.m.). Let's see: 1) Paint basement. 2) Purge house of clutter - how can we accumulate this much crap? 3) Goodwill and library drop off - Maple Grove Library is taking donations until Oct. 6 th !!! 4) Get the yard ready for winter - should I plant more bulbs? 5) Put basement back together - IKEA run ma...

Six weeks

I am sidelined for at least six weeks. No tennis - no good. My bad wheel turned into immobile wheel today thanks to an air cast. Not the most attractive accessory. I had been trying to continue playing with the plantar fasciitis guess I figured it was going to be around for awhile so might as well deal with it. This plan actually worked out for the best because when I was playing on Thursday there was this loud pop in the bottom of my foot. Suddenly my heel felt better, so I thought, "Maybe it released all of the bad heel juju into the rest of my foot." Well, it was something like that. Evidently I tore a ligament in my foot which the doctor told me is really the best thing that could have happened. The reason why is it cured the plantar fasciitis. Plus the recovery time for the ligament thing is about six weeks versus potentially months or years with the other. So all in all I guess it was a good thing to tear a ligament. I am bummed because I can't do any exercise for t...

Z is like for Zodiac

Shelly and I went to the movie Zodiac last night. The theater was nearly packed with mostly men and couples, so it was a bit obvious when two teenage girls talking on cell phones walked into the movie 20 minutes late. Shelly turned to me, "Why would you even come to a movie like this if you are 20 minutes late?" I agreed especially since they had already missed the first victims meeting their demise and the opening which told the viewer this was a true story. You just had to know they were going to be lost the rest of the movie, plus the only reason they were probably there was to see Jake Gyllenhaal . The movie was very good, one of the best I have seen since The Departed , I read the book and the prime suspect was much creepier on the screen than I imagined in real life. At the end of the movie, Shelly stopped by the ladies room and I waited outside. The two teenage girls we saw walk in late also went to the ladies room with cell phones glued to their ears already. At our...
