Needle in a haystack

Yesterday I did something I feel really good about. I helped my aunt find her best friend from elementary school she hasn't talked to in 44 years. For years when my aunt talked about Marilyn, she would always end with saying, "I would really like to find her, but I don't know where to start."

Well, yesterday we started and stopped in about three hours thanks to the amazing invention called the Internet. Marilyn moved from Pine City in the 1950s to Sioux Falls and had a common maiden name which is next to impossible to find someone as there were 22,500 hits for her name on Google.com. Finally I was able to track her down through Classmates.com and Ancestry.com from South Dakota, Texas, New Jersey and finally ending up in southeast Iowa.

My aunt called Marilyn last night for a long overdue talk and are going to meet very soon.

The best part is Marilyn even invited me.

Susan, you rock. I always remember the visits from your mom and your aunt and your grandma up at school and thinking "wow, those women are TIGHT." it's great to see that none of that ever goes away...

If anyone wants me to find someone for you let me know. I have more time now that I am off the tennis circut. :-)

Also am doing a lot more genealogy if anyone needs anything.

Carey- Thanks for remembering my crazy family so fondly. We are tight, sometimes too tight but I wouldn't want it any other way.

Hiatus no more

I don't know what it is about January, but 'round about January 15th I go into a complete and utter funk - hence no blogging. It is as if I need to cocoon for a bit, metamorphosize, and re-enter the world in February. This year has been especially bad due to our chaotic schedules with the kids, plus I have been working almost 60 hours per week as it is budget time and we are determining what exactly does "hunkering down" look like. Don't worry, work is still fun, challenging might be a better word. I truly love my new job, actually it was a promotion - didn't officially know until this week, so that jump starts the old engine as well. Other than that I have also realized in the last week my body is really, really mad at me. Things are just not working as they should and finally made the decision to go see the doctor who helped with the torn ligament a few years ago. Bottom line, just haven't been taking care of myself and he cracked me around a bit so can ...

I am usually an open book...

however have made the decision to have The Schmidt House be invite only, you are the ones that I want to share our lives with - if there is someone that I have omitted by mistake, please let me know. Think that there are some family members that I do not have email addresses for, so will need to track those down. I have found that I have been a little blog "stuck" for the last few months knowing that there were a lot of people who read my site and I became a little self conscious about what I was writing as to not offend anyone - not like I go out of my way to offend, but after awhile you realize that there are some pretty sensitive folks out there. I know it takes all kinds for the world to go around, however I don't want to have to worry about it when I am here. So now I feel a little more free to speak my mind which you all know has never been a problem, but now I feel I am among friends. Thanks for sharing this little adventure with the Schmidts...

So today was one of those days when I was waiting for Dwight Schrute to walk in at any time and make popcorn

Yesterday was pretty blah at work considering everyone just got back from the holiday, there were the usual conversations, "So how was your Christmas?" blah, blah, blah. If yesterday was blah, then today was just odd. At one point I felt that I had entered an alternate universe and we had become Dunder Mifflin . You see, Thursday is popcorn day on the Garden Level. I guess the popcorn is there to help boost morale and raise a little ching for various charities. However, since today really felt like Tuesday, not Thursday, people just weren't in the mood for popcorn and the world went a little askew. It all started when someone complained that the popcorn smell was bothering them. I don't know why this day was different than any other Thursday, but today it bothered them. Maybe they were on the holiday hangover edge and it just tipped. So management was on the prowl for a new home for the popcorn machine. That is when I was approached and asked if it would be ok if t...
