The wonderful thing about Google, is Google's a wonderful thing

Last night I was putzing around on iTunes and somehow got to the B-52's. Everyone remembers them and their Love Shack, but I clicked on Rock Lobster listened to the 30 second snipet and was reminded of a good friend from so long ago in a land far, far away called Wyoming. So on a whim I went to Google and typed in her name and was pleasantly surprised to find her doing what she always wanted to do.

When we were eleven this friend was interested in archeology and subsequently became obsessed with George Armstrong Custer (GAC) and the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Odd interest for an eleven year old girl, but soon all of us in our little group were talking about George and his untimely demise. My friend was quite the artist and would draw pictures of GAC on our notebooks, notes etc.

We continued our friendship through Junior High and into High School and were still close when I moved before our junior year. She had a fantastic, dry sense of humor and we would find humor in the most inane items: pink flamingos, her dog Tootsie - anything.

I have often wondered whatever became of her and now I know. I sent her an email last night and was so happy to see a response in my inbox this morning. She is living in Baltimore and is working for the National Park Service doing archeology and historic preservation. How cool is that? She has been on this path for 26 years and is doing what she loves each and every day.

A few months ago I wrote a blog about favorite songs and mentioned a little tune by the Violent Femmes, driving around with my friends and having a great time. This person is one of those friends who would sing along in the '66 Belvedere.

I was happy to read in her email, "I have fond memories of riding around with you listening to the Violent Femmes and the Dead Milkmen, so I'm glad to know you are happy and well."

I am so glad I have been able to connect with her, hopefully we will continue the dialogue in the years to come. So my friends maybe today is the day to Google someone and throw out a line - you never know what might come back.

I have an ocd relationship with Google! I think I google every day. Mostly on "how to raise a baby newt" or "coffee mug art with miro on it" or "what is the best land turtle indoor habitat?" and lastly "how to remove an egg from your painted turtle?" K~

Gainfully employed

I heard back last night from Cargill , I start back into the world of the gainfully employed as an independent contractor on October 8 th . My old client, who will now be my new client, Jeff wrote: I'm thrilled we get to work together again. This is the most important project our business unit has taken on in a lot of years so I feel a lot better knowing you're going to be part of it. OK now I'm nervous. Eeek - the most important project? Whoa, better bring the A game, but you know I am excited - scared - but am ready to go. I have so much to do before the 8 th , gotta get the list together to make the most of my kid free week (now that litte man is at daycare in the a.m.). Let's see: 1) Paint basement. 2) Purge house of clutter - how can we accumulate this much crap? 3) Goodwill and library drop off - Maple Grove Library is taking donations until Oct. 6 th !!! 4) Get the yard ready for winter - should I plant more bulbs? 5) Put basement back together - IKEA run ma...

Six weeks

I am sidelined for at least six weeks. No tennis - no good. My bad wheel turned into immobile wheel today thanks to an air cast. Not the most attractive accessory. I had been trying to continue playing with the plantar fasciitis guess I figured it was going to be around for awhile so might as well deal with it. This plan actually worked out for the best because when I was playing on Thursday there was this loud pop in the bottom of my foot. Suddenly my heel felt better, so I thought, "Maybe it released all of the bad heel juju into the rest of my foot." Well, it was something like that. Evidently I tore a ligament in my foot which the doctor told me is really the best thing that could have happened. The reason why is it cured the plantar fasciitis. Plus the recovery time for the ligament thing is about six weeks versus potentially months or years with the other. So all in all I guess it was a good thing to tear a ligament. I am bummed because I can't do any exercise for t...

Z is like for Zodiac

Shelly and I went to the movie Zodiac last night. The theater was nearly packed with mostly men and couples, so it was a bit obvious when two teenage girls talking on cell phones walked into the movie 20 minutes late. Shelly turned to me, "Why would you even come to a movie like this if you are 20 minutes late?" I agreed especially since they had already missed the first victims meeting their demise and the opening which told the viewer this was a true story. You just had to know they were going to be lost the rest of the movie, plus the only reason they were probably there was to see Jake Gyllenhaal . The movie was very good, one of the best I have seen since The Departed , I read the book and the prime suspect was much creepier on the screen than I imagined in real life. At the end of the movie, Shelly stopped by the ladies room and I waited outside. The two teenage girls we saw walk in late also went to the ladies room with cell phones glued to their ears already. At our...
