The Girls from Ames

I need to share this with my blogging friends, and others of course.

Last weekend I picked up People and went right to the book pick section (always go there first) and there was the Critics Pick of the week for "The Girls from Ames" by Jeffrey Zaslow. It chronicles the friendship of 11 women who grew up in Ames in the 60s and 70s. To this day they are friends who get together every year for a reunion and are one another sisters.

I made a mental note to request it from HCLIB, however never got around to it until it was too late - 209 requests and 6 copies in the whole stinkin' library system.

So...was at Costco the other night and took a break because my work shoes were killing me and lo and behold there it was in front of me: "The Girls from Ames". I bit the bullet and bought it (even though my resolution was to NOT purchase anymore books since I have a library of unread books in the basement).

Last night after a very trying couple of days at work - can you say pandemic preparation??? whole 'nother story - I picked up the book at 5:00 and was finished by 9:30.

Loved it. I have always been a bit of a voyeur into other's lives (must be why I love biographies) and I enjoyed how these women each have had their own trials, were willing to share (however, you kind of feel like you got the Cliff Note version of a couple of their lives). I even found myself crying - which I never do when I read - at certain points.

So, friends if you need to pick up a quick gift for Mother's Day I would recommend heading out and getting a copy of this for your favorite mom, sister or girlfriend.

Sus--read People at the orthodontist this week, came straight home and plugged The Girls from Ames into the county library system webpage and got nothin'. Nothing.

Sigh. I'm seriously considering going to Costco, buying the book, reading it verrrry carefully and then giving it to my MIL, who arrives on Wednesday.

Six weeks

I am sidelined for at least six weeks. No tennis - no good. My bad wheel turned into immobile wheel today thanks to an air cast. Not the most attractive accessory. I had been trying to continue playing with the plantar fasciitis guess I figured it was going to be around for awhile so might as well deal with it. This plan actually worked out for the best because when I was playing on Thursday there was this loud pop in the bottom of my foot. Suddenly my heel felt better, so I thought, "Maybe it released all of the bad heel juju into the rest of my foot." Well, it was something like that. Evidently I tore a ligament in my foot which the doctor told me is really the best thing that could have happened. The reason why is it cured the plantar fasciitis. Plus the recovery time for the ligament thing is about six weeks versus potentially months or years with the other. So all in all I guess it was a good thing to tear a ligament. Have you met my friend Jane?

I am a complete Jane Austen junkie, in fact I think that I need to maybe seek help. Shelly tells me I need help and we all know Shel tells it like it is, so it must be true. "Hello, my name is Susan and I love Jane. Jane Austen." I read "Pride and Prejudice", annually. Yes, every year I spend a weekend with Elizabeth Bennett and Fitzwilliam Darcy. Now that I think about it I may need to skip my little tradition this year because I have so many other never read books piled up and there is a due date looming from the library. The reason I share this closeted truth with you my friends is because there is a TV event starting this weekend on PBS. It is basically the 10 weeks of Jane, every Sunday night PBS will air a adaptation of Jane Austen's novels. Here is the schedule.
