It is all worth it...

So, was feeling a little guilty about my rant about the basketball thing. It is a tremendous amount of time and frustrating at times sending out, "Thank you for your email, I am sorry to hear that you are incapable of navigating a website...." I don't really say it that way, am much nicer than that.

However, tonight I received a note from a kid, or should say young man, I have been working with this past week. He is a senior and emailed himself to say that he really wanted to play basketball and didn't have any money to pay for it. I spoke with him and inquired if he would be able to come up with half (about $75) and the association would cover the rest.

He said that he is working at Burger King and that money goes to help out his family since his mom lost her job. Dad isn't around. I told him I would follow up and I forwarded his info to one of my fellow volunteers with a note and asking what we could do for him. I hadn't heard back from him until tonight.

I received a quick email while I sat in my car waiting for the kids to finish religion class, admittedly I started to cry.

It said:

Mrs. Schmidt,

I appreciate all you done for me. I spoke to the vice president and she got me the full payment scholarship, you really helped me to get on the basketball team. I wish you good luck in the future.

Thank you
JR

So, yeah it is all worth it...

I'm crying, too.

I wonder why we (meaning me, really) are so me-centered, when helping others bring such joy.

Hiatus no more

I don't know what it is about January, but 'round about January 15th I go into a complete and utter funk - hence no blogging. It is as if I need to cocoon for a bit, metamorphosize, and re-enter the world in February. This year has been especially bad due to our chaotic schedules with the kids, plus I have been working almost 60 hours per week as it is budget time and we are determining what exactly does "hunkering down" look like. Don't worry, work is still fun, challenging might be a better word. I truly love my new job, actually it was a promotion - didn't officially know until this week, so that jump starts the old engine as well. Other than that I have also realized in the last week my body is really, really mad at me. Things are just not working as they should and finally made the decision to go see the doctor who helped with the torn ligament a few years ago. Bottom line, just haven't been taking care of myself and he cracked me around a bit so can ...

So today was one of those days when I was waiting for Dwight Schrute to walk in at any time and make popcorn

Yesterday was pretty blah at work considering everyone just got back from the holiday, there were the usual conversations, "So how was your Christmas?" blah, blah, blah. If yesterday was blah, then today was just odd. At one point I felt that I had entered an alternate universe and we had become Dunder Mifflin . You see, Thursday is popcorn day on the Garden Level. I guess the popcorn is there to help boost morale and raise a little ching for various charities. However, since today really felt like Tuesday, not Thursday, people just weren't in the mood for popcorn and the world went a little askew. It all started when someone complained that the popcorn smell was bothering them. I don't know why this day was different than any other Thursday, but today it bothered them. Maybe they were on the holiday hangover edge and it just tipped. So management was on the prowl for a new home for the popcorn machine. That is when I was approached and asked if it would be ok if t...

Have you met my friend Jane?

I am a complete Jane Austen junkie, in fact I think that I need to maybe seek help. Shelly tells me I need help and we all know Shel tells it like it is, so it must be true. "Hello, my name is Susan and I love Jane. Jane Austen." I read "Pride and Prejudice", annually. Yes, every year I spend a weekend with Elizabeth Bennett and Fitzwilliam Darcy. Now that I think about it I may need to skip my little tradition this year because I have so many other never read books piled up and there is a due date looming from the library. The reason I share this closeted truth with you my friends is because there is a TV event starting this weekend on PBS. It is basically the 10 weeks of Jane, every Sunday night PBS will air a adaptation of Jane Austen's novels. Here is the schedule. So, if you have never had the opportunity to get to know Jane, maybe it is time. Think about it, there is no new TV, it's cold out and you can learn new some new sayings for Monday. Nothing ...
