Duran Duran

I have been reading my old journals from Junior High, can't tell you how painful that is. There are some high points (playing basketball and MTV) and many low points (12th chair in clarinet and trying to learn how to use the curling iron correctly).

One of my happiest places in 1984 was my love for Duran Duran I went on and on and on ...

2/20/84
Just got the new Duran Duran tape. Seven and the Ragged Tiger. I have their others as records I want to get them as tapes. Rio is really good I think I like the new one better. They have been on MTV I wait to see their videos.

Everyone likes John Taylor. Amy likes John Taylor. I like Roger Taylor. They are not related. Andy Taylor is also in the band he is not related either. There must be a lot of people in England named Taylor.

I love DURAN DURAN. I love the band Duran Duran so much. I think Roger Taylor is so cute. I could tell you anything about them. Roger was born on April 26, 1960. He has a dog named "Kelly" and a Porsche. Just a few facts. They are from England and I probably never be able to meet them, but I still like them.

5/13/84
Duran Duran has a new song "The Reflex". It is my favorite song.

Gotta get to bed it is 12:00. Did you know it is morning in England and Duran Duran is just waking up? I would like to live in England.

I can't believe it is only 5 more years until 1989 and I will be out of High School. Roger Taylor will be 29 years old in 1989. Oh my God that is so old. Roger Taylor is also short, he is 5'9". I am almost 5'9". It is tall for a girl not for a guy. Oh well I still like him. I think Tom Cruise is short also.

8/12/84
Been at basketball camp in Laramie and band camp in Keystone. I got a new tape we listened to at basketball camp by Prince. It is good, it is called "Purple Rain" I still like Duran Duran, Amy got me a bunch of cool buttons.

8/15/84
ROGER TAYLOR GOT MARRIED!!! This is a horrible day. I don't believe it he was my favorite. Now I don't like Duran Duran as well. He was too short anyway.

9/1/84
I really like WHAM! now almost better than Duran Duran. George Michael is cute but it is weird how he has two earrings. Oh well...

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH SAD.

i had the EXACT same diary but about a decade earlier, for the Bay City Rollers. i painstakingly bought only plaid things, and dreamed about being married to Leslie constantly.

by the 80s, i was much more mature. i mildly loved Nick Rhodes from DD, more majorly loved George Michael and even BOY GEORGE and then fell absolutely totally life-changingly in love with Michael Stipe a few years later.

um. i guess the names have changed but the crushes have not. i just posted a video of rob thomas right before i read this :)) he he.

i shared your love affair with duran duran, susan. nothing like a little "hungry like the wolf" to make a geeky seventh grader feel cool :)

So glad to hear I was not the only one out there with Tiger Beat and BOP posters.

I loved the Bay City Rollers. Those kilts! I can totally remember being in Kathy Kovarik's basement listening to her sister's SATURDAY NIGHT record and getting in trouble when she found us out.

Oh, the days...and the gay men we loved.

I recently heard a bit of the "Purple Rain" soundtrack, and had to wonder what on earth my parents were thinking when they let me buy (and memorize) that one. Talk about an education.

Gainfully employed

I heard back last night from Cargill , I start back into the world of the gainfully employed as an independent contractor on October 8 th . My old client, who will now be my new client, Jeff wrote: I'm thrilled we get to work together again. This is the most important project our business unit has taken on in a lot of years so I feel a lot better knowing you're going to be part of it. OK now I'm nervous. Eeek - the most important project? Whoa, better bring the A game, but you know I am excited - scared - but am ready to go. I have so much to do before the 8 th , gotta get the list together to make the most of my kid free week (now that litte man is at daycare in the a.m.). Let's see: 1) Paint basement. 2) Purge house of clutter - how can we accumulate this much crap? 3) Goodwill and library drop off - Maple Grove Library is taking donations until Oct. 6 th !!! 4) Get the yard ready for winter - should I plant more bulbs? 5) Put basement back together - IKEA run ma

Z is like for Zodiac

Shelly and I went to the movie Zodiac last night. The theater was nearly packed with mostly men and couples, so it was a bit obvious when two teenage girls talking on cell phones walked into the movie 20 minutes late. Shelly turned to me, "Why would you even come to a movie like this if you are 20 minutes late?" I agreed especially since they had already missed the first victims meeting their demise and the opening which told the viewer this was a true story. You just had to know they were going to be lost the rest of the movie, plus the only reason they were probably there was to see Jake Gyllenhaal . The movie was very good, one of the best I have seen since The Departed , I read the book and the prime suspect was much creepier on the screen than I imagined in real life. At the end of the movie, Shelly stopped by the ladies room and I waited outside. The two teenage girls we saw walk in late also went to the ladies room with cell phones glued to their ears already. At our
